Just Stuff

The other day I received a phone call from a friend who lost her home in Paradise, CA, last November to the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history! Most of the town was burned. At least 85 people died and nearly 2,000 homes and buildings burned to the ground.

Even today, 10 months after the fire, the town still looks like a war zone. Hundreds of trucks continue to haul debris from the area each day. Some residents are now waiting for the okay to go back, though the water is still not safe to drink. I have not even mentioned all the animals displaced.

This friend who called me the other day -- I was praying with her as she traveled down that burning hill with the fire on every side of her, so close it was scorching the paint off her car. I don’t know how long it took her to get to safety, but some drivers took four hours to get away. Others abandoned their cars and fled on foot.

Along with the tragic stories, we hear miraculous ones. Amazing interventions. My friend got down that hill to her son. Just months before, she lost her husband of 61 years, and now everything she owned was gone except for the clothes on her back and her very damaged car. In spite of this, she said to me, “Judy I have great peace and a living hope – my Jesus. This was only STUFF! I will not be taking it with me when I exit this life!”

Such a difference in those who know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord and those who do not. Believers have a living hope. They know they are just passing through this life and will soon be in another called Heaven! Sadly, non-believers have no living hope , only a worldly hope that is so often disappointing. Without a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, this very sad world and its systems are all they have.

So, the reason my friend called the other day was to tell me that the Lord had provided a house for her. She looks forward to moving into it, and added, “I am not going to clutter it up with a bunch of STUFF! I have been abundantly blessed, Judy.”

John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Well, let me start with the most important thing you bring up. I noticed the word I THINK in your question. Just because you go to church does not mean you are a born-again believer.

I know I am supposed to be joyful this time of the year, but I am not! It all seems so plastic and empty to me, even in the church! Feeling Pretty Empty

Have you ever thought about the word “wilderness” and what that means for the Christian and the non-Christian? To be a Christian we must believe—which is to trust and have confidence that Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again! Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

STAY WATCHFUL! I am sure we can all agree, 2025 started off with much tragedy and woe! Terrorist attacks killing many, devastating fires in the LA area, a horrible plane and helicopter collision, and another plane crash two days later! Many families in mourning. Truly, the devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy, and sadly, he’s doing a good job at it. But remember, our Lord is far greater than the devil, and He is ultimately in control.

Christianity 101—Life with God after Salvation We are living in very tough times that are only getting harder. As followers of Jesus, we should be strong in the Lord and full of faith, experiencing the God of the impossible. But are we? Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” I believe Jesus is looking at us and our fellowships and asking if we truly believe this. Are we living this Scripture out to a watching world?

We are living in some very dark, wild times. Our manual for success (the Bible) tells us to know the seasons in which we live. We must be alert and watchful and know and understand how our success manual tells us to have success.
