I get a kick out of some of these ads that say “Spend More, Save More!” or “Buy 2 — get the 3rd FREE!” “Only 3 left! Sale ends midnight tonight!” Businesses pay big bucks to figure ways to trap us. I was looking at a beautifully jeweled bracelet on a store’s online ad. I read everything about the bracelet which took a few minutes. Then I closed it out. The very next day I got an email from that store saying something like, “Still thinking about that bracelet, aren’t you? Can’t get it out of your mind, can you?” Unbelievable the depths advertisers will go.
These ads try to trick us into thinking of all we’ll save by buying more of their stuff. Truly, we’d save more if we’d just stay home or didn’t go online. We the followers of Christ must be very careful of the devil’s devices to suck us into his schemes to take our money. So many Christians are over their heads in debt when the Bible says, Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. (Romans 13:8) To owe means to be under obligation, be bound, in debt.
We are to be doers of the Word, not hearers only. I tell people never buy emotionally and never give emotionally. Ask the Holy Spirit if this is what you are to do. His job is to lead us into all truth, so let’s let Him to do it. Walk away and allow our emotions to be quiet over the item; then, if we are to have it, go buy it.
When a Christian lives above their means, they have fallen into the devil’s plan. John 10:10 says, The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. No way can we have that abundant life that our Lord promises if we are preoccupied with how we are going to pay our bills because of a silly emotional purchase. Followers of Christ — let’s not allow the enemy to trick us into worldly spending. Remember, we are to be good stewards of what God gives us!
